Risk Management

The ability of a business to mitigate, transfer, avoid or accept all hazards at the appropriate level is essential to successful operation of core business functions. RTB has considerable experience in assisting clients to improve their risk resilience, particularly in:

  1. Risk management system development and training (to AS4360 or ISO31000)
  2. Preparedness documentation:
    1. Escalation processes/scales
    2. Emergency management plans
    3. Critical infrastructure planning
    4. Business continuity planning
  3. Strategic, tactical and operational business risk profiling/reporting
  4. People, process and systems capability risk assessments
  5. Asset condition risk assessments.

We have also built several IT tools to assist our clients (and indeed, our own business) to ensure that risk management techniques are applied consistently and efficiently.

CASE STUDY – Risk Management

Sun Water needed to prepare itself for the possibility of avian flu (“bird flu”) striking Australia and the potentially catastrophic consequences. RTB developed relevant disaster/event escalation processes, business continuity plans and communication protocols for Sun Water and finally trained staff in the application and integration of risk management.

Integrated management systems (QA, EMS and WH&S)

We have considerable experience in aligning business management systems, including Quality Systems; Environmental Management Systems; and Workplace Health & Safety Systems, with other core management processes, such as accounting, project management and performance management.

Such an Integrated Management System (IMS) is not necessarily an IT system. However, an IMS can be supported by IT and we have significant experience in the design and implementation of IT support for IMS. Our Integrated Management Systems are based around the standard management processes of direction, planning, operating, tracking and reviewing.

RTB strongly believes in integrating management systems because it benefits businesses in the following ways:

  1. Assists in aligning (and ensuring universal focus on) the organisation’s strategic direction and performance measures
  2. Links the various management processes in such a way that boundaries between processes are seamless yet accountabilities and responsibilities are clear
  3. Standardises processes and procedures throughout the organisation, increasing efficiency and effectiveness and drastically reducing “double-handling”
  4. Ensures that compliance to legal requirements, standards and audit regimes is institutionalised and part of the culture
  5. Assists in developing simpler and more valuable management reporting
  6. Facilitates the existence of a cohesive, integrated entity.
CASE STUDY – Integrated management systems

The civil construction business within BCC, City Works (which delivers roads, drainage, walk ways, bridges, signals and signs), contracted RTB to turn their silo-based systems into integrated, operational-based, management systems which met the Australian standards in QA (AS9001), environment (AS14000) and WH&S (AS4801).

Information Management and technology

Our increasing involvement in IT systems has evolved as we have worked to focus, simplify and sustain our clients’ business processes in order for them to meet their business objectives. In particular, it has developed from our desire to improve the planning and reporting of business/operational performance.

We have produced many simple routines in clients’ existing software to support their processes. Some of the tools we have developed support the following processes:

  1. Risk resilience
  2. Performance Management / business reporting
  3. Competency assessment / workforce planning
  4. Strategic Asset Management
  5. Scheduling

On occasion, these have been developed further for use as a prototype, prior to a full program development or major IT system purchase.

We have also been involved in assisting clients to identify their EXACT system requirements prior to a major IT purchase/development – an activity that is frequently under-rated and, if poorly performed, can have extremely costly consequences. Furthermore, we have frequently taken on the hard work of developing business cases, preparing Requests for Proposal (RFP) and developing tender documentation and tender evaluation criteria.

RTB has also managed implementation of IT systems and the associated business change activities (whether the systems were purchased “off-the-shelf” or developed).

CASE STUDY – Information management and technology

Brisbane City Council (City Governance Division) hired RTB to manage the final stages of the beleaguered Human Resources Information System (HRIS) implementation, to ensure that the system was practically commissioned and that Council officers could operate and maintain the system in a sustainable, commercial manner.
